Gartner "IBM Users Should Experiment With Sametime Unified Telephony"

Category
Gartner has published some research with the following recommendations for Sametime customers:
    * Ask to speak with references using SUT in beta to learn their experiences.
    * Test SUT in a small area.
    * Figure out where the product can improve processes.
    * Don't undertake a major deployment until the product is stable and you can prove a return on investment.
    * Ask your telephony vendor about its plans to integrate with SUT.

This is good advice, I'm going to go a step further however, make sure you look closely at the costs of testing SUT, this is not some software you can just download from Passport, install on a VM and mess around with. So Gartners advice is good, but expensive, especially for smaller companies.  SUT has some strict IBM hardware requirements, and for a while you're going to need IBM Global Services to help with installation and deployment.  So I'd advise to list exactly what it is you want from SUT, what are the features you're looking for, then check with your existing telephony provider today, and see what Sametime integration they already offer, what most customers expect from SUT is very likely available today in one form or another from telephone vendor.

Gravatar Image1 - I couldn't agree with you more, Carl. I think much of what customers can already get from integrating Sametime Standard with what they have has been lost in the promotion of SUT. Most vendors already provide integrations for:

click-to-call
click-to-conference
phone presence
phone control (desk phone & soft phone)
audio conferencing integration with Sametime web conferencing

and more, depending on the vendor.
